Lulu Mall " World Of Happiness" @ Edapally, Kochi, Kerala

Lulu Shopping Mall, Kochi

A Pictorial Walk-Through This Wonderful World Of Happiness!!!

By - Lt Col D Purushothaman Pillay (Retd)

The EMKE Group of the God-gifted Malayali tycoon, NRI Billionaire businessman and living legend, M A Yusuffali, has gifted to Kochi, its biggest landmark, and India's largest (in GLA terms) shopping destination, in the form of The Lulu Shopping Mall at Edapally. The Sunday that fell on the 10th of March 2013, will go down as a red-letter day in the history of the growth of the city of Kochi. For it was on this monumental day, when this sprawling 2.5 million square feet magnificent shopping haven, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Oommen Chandy.

They say a picture tells a thousand stories. I am therefore not writing much, and shall allow my photographs to speak for themselves. Included below, are many fascinating pictures, I had collected over my myriad visits, to this beautiful mall over the past ten months, for the pleasure of the reader, to get a sense of what this splendid Lulu Mall, is all about.

Enjoy this personal pictorial chronicle, that I have compiled over many visits of this modern day monument I marvel....

This engineering marvel, ensconced on the confluence of three of Kerala's major arterial highways viz; NH 17, Kochi Bypass & NH 47; was designed by the world-famous, 75 year old, London-headquartered, leading design, structural engineering and project management consultancy- WS Atkins plc. The Lulu Group is fabled to have invested a whopping Rs 1600 crores, on this four-tiered mall, which includes the copious basement parking. The Mall and the adjoining Hotel is spread over an area of 26 acres.

The Lulu Mall by their own admission, 'is an eclectic ensemble of retail offerings'. It has this grand, translucent-glass roofed atrium that welcomes you in, bathed in a shower of glowing incandescence and glistening opulence on the ground floor, leading to another section of the Hypermarket, which is spread over 278,000 square feet, selling the choicest groceries, baked items, canned foods, frozen foods, fresh fruits and vegetables. More importantly, it boasts of 28 check-outs, thereby thoughtfully ensuring, that no one is in a serpentine queue, waiting for long, for check out. There is also an amazing Butchery and Seafood Stall, which offers you the best meat and fish cuts, money can buy in India. The 145,000 square feet, Lulu Department Store, on the first floor sells garments, luggage, cosmetics, footwear, white goods and other non-food items. The Tablez Food Company, has earmarked 48,000 square feet space, for a fine dining restaurant. Another 19,000 square feet enroute to the cinemas, is earmarked for a patisserie and coffee shop from Bloomsbury's, an Artisan Bakery cum Boutique Cafe, on the second floor.

THE LULU HYPERMARKET PICTURES

The Lulu Hypermarket, Kochi, nestles within its inner recesses - almost like a secret treasure trove - an exclusive Seafood Stall. Here on display, is a great medley of native and peregrine varietals of the edible aquatic species. This Seafood extravaganza, is adjoining the Butchery section, that I had reviewed earlier. It is a sprawling exhibition, with a wide array of selection. For once, I can safely say, one is really spoilt for choice. I love the color coding 'Red' for meats and 'Blue' for the fish. One gets to choose from a wide and exotic variety of fish here. I have seen some of the best and freshest cuts of fish, which could drive even an ardent ichthyomaniac, crazy.

The Lulu Hypermarket Butchery has absolutely the best and freshest cuts of meats one can ever ask for. There is a wide variety awaiting you, in both the meat and fish choices being made available there, these days. There is freshness written all over it in bold capitals. You name it and they have it. Be it the sirloin, brisket, flank, round, rib, chuck or fore shank of the beef; or the leg, chump, loin, shoulder, shanks, chops or offals of lamb, it is all on display. I have seen some of the best cuts of Lamb, Beef, Buffalo, Veal, Duck and Chicken here. I needn't say anything, the pictures speak for themselves. Actually am dumbfounded, and speechless with amazement. I was considering it, but I may now, never end up being a vegetarian! It is a pleasure to see the smartly turned out, busy, white-uniformed butchers silently go about their business. There is a palpable freshness one feels in the warm tingle that lingers on one's fingers on being handed-in the freshly cling-wrapped meat packages. Meat buying is not a stinky, messy affair any more, everything is so seamless, hygienic, neat and clean here.

Those were a few pictures celebrating the arrival of the Pride of Kerala - a shopping extravaganza called Lulu Shopping Mall. Those pictures should tell a thousand stories, I have just posted a few old ones, for you to feast your eyes on. I hope you liked them.

I invite everyone to come and celebrate this new world of happiness!
